At Project Clean Waves, we believe that change starts in the heart — that no matter your age, passion + action is a powerful combination. Founded by a group of high school students, our mission is to inspire communities to take a stand against water pollution and work towards a more sustainable future.
Water pollution is a pressing global issue that affects every corner of our planet. Across the world, our rivers, lakes, and oceans are being contaminated by harmful chemicals, plastics, and untreated waste. According to the United Nations, over 2 billion people live in countries experiencing high water stress, and polluted water is responsible for the death of nearly 1.5 million people annually due to preventable diseases. The situation is dire, as pollutants from industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and urbanization continue to degrade our precious water sources, threatening both human health and the survival of marine life. Without immediate intervention, the damage to ecosystems could become irreversible, impacting future generations’ access to clean water.
Locally in Pennsylvania, water pollution is a significant concern as well. Local waterways such as the Susquehanna and Delaware Rivers, which provide drinking water to millions of residents, are increasingly vulnerable to contamination. Agricultural runoff, acid mine drainage, and stormwater carrying plastic and chemicals into rivers have led to higher levels of pollutants in our local streams and lakes. In urban areas, industrial waste and littering exacerbate the problem. These pollutants not only affect the quality of our drinking water but also harm aquatic life and disrupt the local ecosystems. The urgency of addressing this issue at both the local and global level cannot be overstated.
Water is one of our most precious resources, yet pollution, waste, and unsustainable practices threaten its quality and availability. Recognizing the urgency of this problem, we decided to take action. At the heart of Project Clean Waves is a simple yet powerful mission: to protect our planet’s water sources through education, advocacy, and hands-on volunteer efforts. We believe that by equipping individuals with knowledge and opportunities to act, we can create lasting change. Our focus is on engaging students and the community in efforts that not only make an immediate impact but also foster long-term habits that promote a cleaner, healthier environment.
We hope to instill lasting change in a variety of ways. From hands-on cleanup events to educational workshops, we aim to collaborate with local authorities, schools, and other organizations to ensure our efforts are well-coordinated and effective. By working together, we aspire to be able to tackle problems like littering, recycling, and water pollution in a way that benefits everyone in our community.
At Project Clean Waves, we believe that everyone has a role to play in protecting our water. Whether you’re a student, a parent, or simply someone who cares about the environment, we invite you to get involved. Together, we can create waves of change for a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations.
